Artist's Statement
Though the newest and most cutting edge technologies are now being used to both make and present art, there is a profound lack of understanding of what has led us to this point. I perceive a disconnect between the relatively new development of digital technology and that of the classic arts. We live in a world of Hollywood blockbusters with unbelievable special effects and we are inundated with elegant displays of authorless graphic design used to sell product. But where in the art world is the audience and appreciation for elegant lines of code created by gifted computer programmers, for example?
My work, both as an artist and as a curator, attempts to help fill this gap I have observed between technology used for commerce and technology used for fine art. I personally like to use recently outdated technology - such as dead programming languages and photocopy machines - as artistic media.
Personal History
Since I was ten, I knew I wanted to be an artist. I have a newspaper clipping from 1985 to prove it.
I received my B.A. in the ominously titled CIA Program (or "Conceptual and Information Arts") from San Francisco State University in 2000, just as the sh** was hitting the fan after the dot-com bust of the late 90s and as George W. Bush was 'elected' for the first time ushering us into this current modern dark age. It is here that I learned the skills that would have given me a 401K and a load of useless shares of stock of some now defunct company had I graduated a few years earlier. Instead, my first job after graduation was at a fast food restaurant. The worst part was that I had to wear a T-shirt with the words "Sandwich Artist" in white stitching on the front.
Flash forward to now, and I still have to work retail from time to time to help fund my projects, but I am also president of a non-profit organization, an art director, a teacher, a fine artist, and a curator.
